Why does my NEW Plasma TV not see the video which is playing on my laptop?

I bought a new TV %26amp; a lead whic connects from my laptop to my tv basically a 15pin monitor lead, everything comes up on the tv as on the laptop screen, but when playing a video file through Real Player or Windows Media Player or other player, the actual video whch you can see on the laptop screen playing is only a purple square on the TV.

But pictures, music %26amp; everything else comes out on tv exactly as on the laptop screen.

You get the software open and the timer and title but not the actual video which is on the laptop screen.

I tried my PC and it worked fine as a 42" Monitor including playing video files such as avi, mpeg, divx???

With my laptop in dual screen mode I seem to remember having to select using a TV as the primary monitor to start the application that played the DVD (mouse cursor appeared on TV). Starting on the laptop and switching to dual monitor mode did not work.

Its a built in feature that nobody wants!

I tried it myself and couldn't get it to work either!
Adjust the Video Overlay settings in your video card control panel.
