Is it possible to connect a VCR to a PC to trf VCR tapes to CD/DVD?

I don't have a DVD recorder, only player, and would like to backup some old videos I have before the tapes wear out. Is the above possible, bearing in mind I don't have a TV tuner card (running a laptop, Acer 1652 which I have to admit is pretty damn good). Can it be done through the USB2 port, or do I HAVE to get a TV card?

The VCR does have SCART connection.

Thanks.

yes you can get an external tv tuner card that runs through USB.

this will letyou hookup your vcr (channel 3 or 4) and play the video into your computer.

with Roxio you can record that signal coming into the machine and then create a dvd to burn (so you will need a burner - again available via USB)

goto to your local computer shop ( not bestbuy ) and they can source what you need and igve you some options

No, you won't be able to do it through a USB2 port directly, but you could get a USB TV Card which would stop you having to get an internal card installed. Hauppage do a few different ones. Not too pricey either.
more than likely you are going to need a tv card. but one thing you can try is to check your local radio shack and see if they have an adapter that will run from a coax to a usb. with drivers, you should be able to pick up a signal from whatever device you are using.

there is definitly a recorder out on the market that will do that though. it records from video tape and puts it on a disk. this should run you about a couple of hundred dollars at max. my wife saw one once for 99 dollars (although I didn't get it.)

one other alternative is, while the picture is still pretty good on the original video tapes, you might want to go on and transf them to other video tapes, and view them from the copies instead of the originals. that way you save your originals.

one last thing though; if you have a desk top available, you can get your tv card for it, if there is none available for your brand of laptop, and you can get alohabob sw to tranfer the file to your laptop for writing...

but you do have many options to accomplish that.

good luck
